In my younger days money was usually pretty tight and not being fully aware of what proper eye protection for outdoor activities provided, I would just pick up a pair of any sunglasses that looked cool. These were usually cheap plastic sunglasses that looked good but offered very little protection from the sun and glare coming off of water surfaces. I would return home from a long day of fishing and wonder why my eyes hurt or try to figure out how in the world I developed such a horrible headache. It took me years to figure out that the fishing sunglasses I was using were related to the problem.
What to Look for In Fishing and Boating Sunglasses
Select a pair of sunglasses that feature polarized lenses. Sunglasses with this type of lens will help enable you to see fish lurking below the surface of the water. The lenses should offer full protection against the suns harmful ultraviolet rays and glare. Glass lenses featuring different layers of polarizing, filtering, and color enhancement, bonded to both the outside and inside of each lens will provide excellent protection against scratching and lens damage. My personal favorite brand for serious fishing and boating is the Costa Del Mar line of sunglasses. The best brands of sunglasses designed for fisherman should fit well enough to keep from sliding off every time your head makes a downward movement and provide good side protection while offering you a full field of vision. There is large variety of lens colors available. I use a gray or blue lens for fishing in under sunny conditions and opt for a lighter amber when fishing on dark overcast days.
